  • Sensors encased in mountable housing

Details
The Digital Sensor Toolkit is an add-on toolkit for LabVIEW™ to integrate digital sensors in NI CompactRIO™ platforms.
Multiple digital sensors from S.E.A. are directly utilizable:
  • DS.A.3 Digital 3-Axis IMU Sensor (67000614)
  • DS.GAM.333 Digital 9-Axis IMU Sensor (67000615)
  • DS.T.3 Digital Temperature Sensor (67000616)
These sensors are separately available through the S.E.A. shop.
The Digital Sensor Toolkit features a LabVIEW API for the FPGA and the Real-Time target. The implementation of the communication protocols is done within the FPGA target. On the Real-Time target only the data conversion functions (conversion to the physical unit) are provided. The API consists of only a few functions per sensor making the programming very easy. The LabVIEW Example Finder contains examples for every single digital sensor showing an exemplary implementation. The API is prepared for the use with the SEA 9210 Multifunction I/O Module as the electrical and mechanical interface to the sensors. The SEA 9210 is perfectly suited for this task, because it not only provides the required digital I/O lines, but also an adequate power supply, which is mostly required by digital sensors. Other digital I/O cRIO modules can be used alternatively, however, in this case the user has to ensure that the digital I/Os are fast enough for the digital protocols and the sensor is adequately powered. This open hardware concept enables the usage of Digital Sensor Toolkit on further target system like National Instruments Single-Board RIO™.

Licensing
After the Installation a full-featured 30-days evaluation phase is offered. Within this time period the product can be tried out, though must not be used for commercial purposes. For commercial use a license is mandatory. The complete licensing terms can be found in the End-User-License-Agreement (EULA).

Notes
  • The evaluation version of the Digital Sensor Toolkit can be downloaded without additional costs from our web site. For the installation the JKI VI Package Manager (VIPM) is required.
  • The conversion from evaluation to a commercial version is done by activation with a license key, that can be purchased separately.

The combination of analog inputs, binary in- and outputs and direct FPGA lines makes the SEA 9210 suitable for a wide range of applications, for example:Diagnosis and monitoring of autonomous CompactRIO systems (System status, supply status...)Supervision of environment parameter (temperature, pressure, humidity, air quality...)Supervision of mechanical stress (shock, vibration...)The module offers 3 analog channels for voltage measurements and 2 analog channels for current measurements (over an external shunt resistor). Two voltage channels and two current channels share a common Analog-Digital converter (ADC) respectively, enabling el. power measurements on two independent channels. The basic function of the analog channels is shown in the image SEA 9210 Analog Input above. The 4 digital inputs can be used to monitor binary system states (e.g. 'Door Open!'). The wide input range offers a great tolerance with respect to the system signal levels. The 4 digital outputs can be used to control system components (e.g. switches, lamps, etc.).The SEA 9210 Multifunction I/O Module offers direct FPGA lines along with an integrated power source to incorporate devices with digital interfaces. Typically, these devices are digital sensors with a digital SPI, I2C or similar communication interface. These sensors often require an external power supply, which can be provided by the integrated power source of the module. All I/O channels are insulated against the backplane. The principle of function is shown in the image SEA 9210 Block Diagram above.System RequirementsNI CompactRIO™ with a FPGA chassis (currently not compatible with NI cRIO-904x/905x. DS.GAM.333 - Digital 9-Axis IMU Sensor
High precise, digital measurement data, Measures acceleration, rotation speed (gyroscope) and magnetic field (compass), Selectable ranges, Fast update rates 1 kHz, Frequency range 0.5 to 250 Hz, Operating temperature range -40 to +85 °CDetailsThe DS.GAM.333 is a 3-axis acceleration sensor, 3-axis rotation speed sensor and a 3-axis magnetic field sensor with a dynamically selectable measurement range. The sensor delivers high precise digital data over the three orthogonal space axis. The measuring unit itself is placed inside a enclosure made of massive aluminum. The enclosure is mountable and provides a socket (M8) for the connection with a control unit. Suitable sensor cables are available from S.E.A separately. The SEA sensors communicate with the control unit by means of a digital protocol (e.g. SPI), which has to be implemented on the control unit. For this purpose S.E.A. provides a ready-to-use solution. As the electrical interface a SEA 9210 Multifunction I/O Module is perfectly suitable, as it provides an adequate sensor supply source beside the required high-speed digital I/O lines. As the software interface the Digital Software Toolkit was created. This software offers function palettes incl. examples in LabVIEW, providing a fast and easy integration into user applications. The Digital Sensor Toolkit basically allows an operation with other cRIO modules different than SEA 9210, as long as suitable high-speed digital lines and sensor supply are ensured by the user.
